Grateful Mess Homestead didn’t start with a carefully thought-out five-year plan.

It started with a scatterbrained girl who has always had a serious love for animals and a questionable ability to say no when someone asks, “Do you think we could raise one of those?”

And apparently, “one of those” eventually became chickens, ducks, guineas, sheep, goats, garden, an orchard, a greenhouse, and eight acres full of projects that seemed like a good idea at the time.

Somewhere along the way, our love for animals turned into something bigger. We started wanting to know where our food came from. We wanted to grow more of it ourselves, raise more of it ourselves, and learn how to make more things from scratch.

Then we discovered that making things from scratch is both incredibly rewarding and a fantastic way to make an even bigger mess in your kitchen.

So here we are.

We’re learning how to garden (which is going about as well as you’d expect), figuring out how to keep animals happy and healthy, trying to keep up with the never-ending list of things that need fixing, and occasionally wondering why we thought adding another project was a good idea.

There are days when everything goes right.

There are also days when the chickens escape, the garden gets overgrown, a project take three times longer than expected, and someone inevitably says, “Well…that didn’t go according to plan.”

But that’s okay.

Because this isn’t a picture-perfect homestead. It’s a real one.

It’s muddy boots, dirty hands, animal chores, homemade bread, fresh eggs, garden experiments, half-finished projects, laughter, frustration, and a whole lot of figuring things out as we go.

We’re not experts. We’re just a family trying to learn, make more things ourselves, know where our food comes from, and build a life that feels a little more connected to the things that matter.

It’s messy.

It’s chaotic.

It’s occasionally held together with duct tape and optimism.

And somehow, we’re grateful for every bit of it.

Welcome to Grateful Mess Homestead.

We’re glad you’re here. Just watch where you step.
