If social media has taught us anything, it’s that homesteading looks peaceful.
The chickens wander through perfectly manicured grass. The gardens are overflowing. The bread comes out of the oven looking like it belongs on the cover of a magazine. The animals all adore their owners, and everyone somehow has time to sit on the porch and watch the sunset.
Reality? Well….not exactly.
Sometimes the ducks act like I’m trying to murder them because I showed up with fresh water, the goats have their noses in whatever I’m doing, whether I invited them or not. And don’t even get me started on raccoons.
Some years the garden thrives. Other years the weeds win. The greenhouse needs repairs. Fences break. Feed prices go up. Projects take twice as long and cost twice as much as we planned.
We’ve made mistakes. We’ve bought animals that weren’t the right fit. We’ve changed directions. We’ve lost sleep worrying about sick animals and predators. We’ve celebrated new babies, mourned losses, and learned more lessons that I can count.
But here’s the thing…
I wouldn’t trade it.
Because somewhere between the early mornings, muddy boots, broken fences, and endless chores, this place became home.
Homesteading isn’t about having the prettiest barn, the biggest garden, or the most followers online. It’s about raising food you trust, caring for animals with purpose, and building a life that’s a little slower, a little simpler, and a whole lot messier.
If you’re here because you’re dreaming about starting a homestead, know this: you don’t have to do it perfectly. You don’t need expensive equipment, fancy buildings, or all the answers.
You just have to start.
