When my husband and I got married in 2006, we had a pretty normal life. We lived in town on a small lot, had two children, and were doing what most families do- figuring life out one day at a time.
My husband was into the prepping lifestyle long before I was. At the time, I wasn’t quite on board with all of it, but he had a vision of having land, being more self-sufficient, and moving our family out of town. Eventually, I started seeing the value in that dream too.
We started looking for property and bought our 8 acres around 2013. The house that came with it was a different story. We compltely gutted the double wide, rebuilt it into a home we love, and finally moved in December of 2015.
Not long after moving in, my husband built me a little chicken coop. We started with chickens, and from there…well, the “mess” began.
Over the years we’ve added animals, removed animals, learned what worked (and what definitely diddnt), fought off raccoons, attempted gardens, built projects, and learned a whol lot through trial and error. Some things went exactly as planned. A lot of things didn’t.
Somewhere alont the way, I started paying much closer attention to what was acutally in the food we were buying from the grocery store. The more I learned, the more I realized I wanted something different for my family. I wanted to know where our food came from and have a bigger hand in providing it.
